Wendy and Lucy (2008)

I didn't watch Dawson's Creek on TV, but I still think Michelle Williams is terrific. Before Brokeback Mountain (2005), there was Dick (1999), a fantasy that owed something to Forrest Gump, by imagining two teenage girls (Williams and Kirsten Dunst) involved in every aspect of Watergate (my then 9 year old loved it, too). The following year she (Williams, not my daughter) starred in a segment of HBO's If These Walls Could Talk 2, as a college student in 1972 who incurs the disdain of her feminist lesbian friends by having an affair with a woman (Chlöe Sevigny) who wears men's clothes (the other two segments, also about lesbians, and the prequel, If These Walls Could Talk, about abortion, were very good, too). She was a bright spot in the quirky Synecdoche, New York (2008). Now Williams, the never-married widow of Heath Ledger, is in every scene of this little indie film that was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and won 3 critics' awards, including one for Williams. Don't look for laughs here, and, when you watch it at home (I think it has left most theatres by now), try to darken your room, because there are some dimly lit scenes. Williams embodies the quiet desperation of her character Wendy. Her hair is short, severe, and brown, she is skinny and hunched over, and she only smiles when interacting with her dog Lucy. Two of her three most emotive scenes are veiled: one with a blanket covering all but her eyes and another shot through a chain link fence, but we feel her pain.

Miranda (2002)

There are some things to like about this English love story/thriller starring Christina Ricci (my two favorites of her work are Ang Lee's The Ice Storm (1997) and Don Roos' The Opposite of Sex (1998), not in that order) as an enigma and John Simm as the innocent guy who gets in way over his head with her. Ricci is dependable, Simm is good, and Julian Rhind-Tutt (as Simm's friend) adds some much needed playfulness. John Hurt and Kyle MacLachlan are in it. There are some interesting overhead shots and other good photography. But I got a bit impatient watching the DVD. See the other two Ricci movies before renting this one.

Absurdistan (2008)

This delightful little (1 hour 28 minutes) fable from Germany and Azerbaijan was a Sundance nominee (warning, the link has spoilers, though the writer says there aren't, and he calls our heroes Ava and Hemelko, but their names are Aya and Temelko). I don't think it's giving anything away to say that many people fall but no one gets hurt and there are guns but no people are shot. It's a battle between the sexes set in a tiny, desolate town that is running out of water. There is some nudity, nearly all the characters are obsessed with sex, and there are subtitles (it's in Russian), so leave the kiddies at home. Most of the dialogue is in voiceover, which freed up Writer/Producer/Director Veit Helmer to cast actors of various nationalities and skill sets to portray the slapstick roles with body language. Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi, who has worked with Chinese directors Kar Wai Wong (2046 (2004), In the Mood for Love (2000)) and Yimou Zhang (Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), Jet Li's Fearless (2006), House of Flying Daggers (2004)) has moved a little ways west to score this and the soundtrack is good on its own (available at Amazon and iTunes).

I've Loved You So Long (Il y a longtemps que je t'aime - 2008)

Not fun, but very good, this French drama features England-born Paris resident Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient (1996), The Horse Whisperer (1998), Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Gosford Park (2001)) and Elsa Zylberstein (a long list of French credits) as sisters Juliette and Léa, respectively. Juliette has just been released after 15 years in prison (for murder) and Léa, who was just a teenager when her sister was convicted, has invited her to join her household in the French town of Nancy, with Léa's husband Luc, their two adopted Vietnamese daughters (the elder one, an 8 year old chatterbox, is adorable), and Luc's aged father. The movie's intensity is lifted from time to time, including scenes in a marvelous swimming pool. We eventually understand what we did not at the beginning, and learn why Léa has loved her sister so long.

Moscow, Belgium (Aanrijding in Moscou) (2008)

Every bit as entertaining as He's Just Not That Into You, but without the ensemble, eye candy, and distribution. Homer Simpson wouldn't see this, because it requires reading (subtitles). The title actually translates to Collision in Moscow (Moscow is the suburb of Ghent, Belgium, in which the movie takes place), and the language is, according to various sources, Flemish, Dutch, and/or a local Ghent dialect (it sounded to me like a combination of Dutch and French). The only mention of Moscow or Moscou is visual: it is written on a passing tram in one brief shot, so, if you miss it, you'll wonder why that name was chosen. Matty is having a bad day. Her husband Werner has left her for one of his art students, she doesn't know where her teenage daughter Vera is, her pre-teen daughter Fien wants to be a teenager, her youngest, Nicky, won't get his face out of his video games, she bumps her car into a huge truck in the grocery store parking lot, gets into a shouting match with the driver Johnny, and then the hijinks begin. This is great fun and it's a shame it's available to so few. I could imagine it as an American remake, as long as they get actors as passionate as Barbara Sarafian (Matty) and Jurgen Delnaet (Johnny), and as languid as Anemone Valcke (Vera). If you can't see it on the big screen, track it down on netflix.

He's Just Not That Into You (2008)

You probably don't need me to tell you about this one. It had a huge opening weekend, including us on the first day. The university-area theatre was packed, mostly with young women. I asked Jack if he minded seeing it. No! he replied emphatically, the stories were told from both male and female points of view, there were plenty of laughs, and lots of eye candy. He asked before it came out, "Why don't they just tell us who is NOT in it?" Ginnifer Goodwin (Margene on HBO's Big Love, and Johnny Cash's first wife in Walk the Line (2005)) stars in this adaptation of the self-help book which is named after a line from Sex and the City. They casted a good match for her childhood self in the opening sequence.

The ensemble also includes Ben Affleck (loved him in Hollywoodland (2006)), Jennifer Aniston (this may be her best work yet, but I am unlikely to see her previous blockbuster Marley & Me (2008)), Drew Barrymore (my favorite is Everyone Says I Love You (1996)), Jennifer Connelly (Oscar winner for A Beautiful Mind (2001), and I also liked Requiem for a Dream (2000) about which I have written twice, House of Sand and Fog (2003), and Little Children (2006)), Kevin Connolly (Eric on HBO's Entourage), Bradley Cooper (the lead doctor in the show-within-the-show on FX's Nip/Tuck), Scarlett Johansson (playing a luscious home-wrecker similar to her Nola on Match Point (2005)), Justin Long (the Mac guy in the commercials, but he has many credits, notably Zack & Miri (2008), Accepted (2006), and Waiting (2005)), and, in a cameo, Kris Kristofferson.

I'm a fan of director Ken Kwapis' TV work: The Office, Bernie Mac, Malcolm in the Middle, Freaks and Geeks, Grounded for Life, and a couple of his movies, He Said, She Said (1991) and About a Boy (2003). I thought Goodwin was in Love, Actually (2003), which resembles this movie in many ways, but the ingenue who makes good was actually Martine McCutcheon, who didn't do much afterwards. The 4 writers (Abby Kohn & Marc Silverstein for the screenplay and Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo for the book), 7 producers (including Barrymore) and Kwapis have a winning formula with this crowd pleaser. See it for some light fluffy entertainment on a date, with friends, or by yourself to cheer up on a lonely afternoon.

Dalai Lama Renaissance (2007)

In 1999 a group of thinkers went to Dharamsala, India, to confer with the exiled Dalai Lama, and it took until now to get the movie released. Some of the participants were also in the documentaries The Secret (2006) and What the Bleep Do We Know? (2004), made later but released sooner. I liked 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama (2006) better. A personal odyssey, it was one man's journey to learn from His Holiness. Renaissance was an ensemble piece. Both documentaries were good, and gave this westerner insight into the sights and sounds of India, Tibet, and Buddhism. They are recommended for anyone with an interest in the Dalai Lama and/or his teachings.

Notorious (2009)

This came so close to being a really good movie, we wondered why it wasn't. One reason was that a half hour should have been trimmed here and there from the 2:02 running time. In the trailer, Faith Evans (Antonique Smith) asked Christopher Wallace (AKA Biggie Smalls AKA Notorious B.I.G., played by Jamal Woolard) if he was a "good boy trying to be bad or a bad boy trying to be good?" This was the central dilemma of the script, never resolved, despite, or maybe because of, the producing involvement of Christopher's mother Voletta Wallace (played in the movie by a tightly wound Angela Bassett). Was it the writing, the mom producing, or the lead actor (Woolard is a Brooklyn-based rapper called Gravy, and up til now was best known for being shot in the rear end in 2006)? That being said, the movie had a lot of entertainment value. The reliable Derek Luke (Pieces of April (2003), Miracle at St. Anna (2008), and his breakthrough role in 2002, Antwone Fisher, which I didn't see) lit up the screen as Sean Combs, as did Bassett and Anthony Mackie (the lead in Spike Lee's She Hate Me (2004) and a small part in the excellent indie Half Nelson (2006), among others) as the mercurial Tupac Shakur. If you want to know if the details of Biggie's short life (1972-1997) were presented correctly, ask someone else. But the music and costumes were fun, and most of the drama compelling. Also, the young Chris was played by Christopher Jordan (CJ) Wallace, now 12, Biggie and Faith's real-life son.

Eden (2008)

There are 17 entries in imdb under the title Eden, which is the second reason Jack and I wondered why it was called that; the first reason is that we didn't hear "Eden" or even "paradise" spoken during the course of the movie (however, I must admit that we had trouble with the Irish accents and were both wishing for closed captions at times, or to have been sitting with Susan & Aongus or Helene & Paddy!). A review of Eugene O'Brian's play, from which he adapted the screenplay, did not have trouble making the connection, though. The movie had beautiful water images and some nice cinematic touches that would be difficult on the page, and the performances, particularly the struggling married couple Billy and Breda Farrell (Aiden Kelly and Eileen Walsh) were moving. This is only supposed to be playing here through Thursday, but I would recommend seeing the nominated films first and catching this on DVD with captions later, unless you are, or are living with, someone Irish.

Last Chance Harvey (2008)

Delightful. As I said in my review of Brideshead Revisited (my very first post to this blog) I would watch Emma Thompson (Stranger Than Fiction (2006), Howard's End (1992), Sense and Sensibility (for which she won a screenwriting Oscar) (1995), a powerful turn as the Hillary-type character in Primary Colors (1998), and lots more) in anything, and this one was a pleasure. Thompson's lonely 40-something (Thompson is really 50) British Kate meets Dustin Hoffman's (also in Stranger Than Fiction, as well as dozens of noteworthy credits) lonely 60-ish (really 72) American Harvey and they spend a day together in London, changing both their lives. Special mention must be made of Harvey's cream linen suit. This is a good second feature for writer/director Joel Hopkins (I did not see the first, Jump Tomorrow (2001)) and I hope to see more from him in the future.

Dexter (Showtime series)

Even before I figured out the producer was a family friend I was hooked on this edgy, violent show, starring the co-star of HBO's Six Feet Under, Michael C. Hall, as Dexter, the serial killer with a code of honor (he kills only bad people--really bad people). It has finished its third season, which included a good turn by Jimmy Smits. Not recommended for bedtime viewing, it can induce nightmares. Beautiful panoramic shots of Miami (good in HD) and spooky music mixed in with salsa tunes enhance your TV experience.

United States of Tara (Showtime series)

My favorite new show (and Janice's, too). Writer/producer Diablo Cody (Oscar winner for writing Juno (2007)) pushes the envelope gently but surely. Toni Colette (Little Miss Sunshine (2006), In Her Shoes (2005), Sixth Sense (1999), Towelhead (2008), her breakthrough Muriel in Muriel's Wedding (1994), and more) is brilliant as the beleaguered Tara, multiple personality disorder patient with three "alters" (other personalities): T, the foul-mouthed teenager; Alice, the prim over-achieving housewife; and Buck, the foul-mouthed biker dude who got his "dick shot off in 'Nam." It's nice to see John Corbett (Northern Exposure (CBS), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), and HBO's Sex and the City) back on the air as Tara's patient husband, and Rosemarie DeWitt (Mad Men (AMC) and Rachel in Rachel Getting Married (2008)) plays Tara's clueless sister. Some months ago, someone wrote to either Dear Abby or Ask Margo (Ann Landers' daughter and heiress of the column, and first cousin to the new Abby) to say that Steven Spielberg and Showtime had a comedy series coming out about multiple personality disorder, and wasn't that terrible because it's a serious problem. The columnist replied that the reader should write to Showtime to complain and tell her friends not to watch. I bristled when I read that and wish I had responded to the column that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but the reader had not yet seen the show! Glad to see that there are thousands of fans now. If you like it too, join a fan club or somehow let the powers that be know that you are watching. I don't want it to suffer the fate of NBC's Book of Daniel (all episodes of the latter are now available on netflix).
