Musings on movies, suitable for reading before or after you see them. I write about things I liked WITHOUT SPOILERS. The only thing I hate more than spoilers is reviewers' trashing movies because they think it makes them seem smart. Movie title links are usually links to blog posts. I've Loved You So Long (Il y a longtemps que je t'aime - 2008)
Not fun, but very good, this French drama features England-born Paris resident Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient (1996), The Horse Whisperer (1998), Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Gosford Park (2001)) and Elsa Zylberstein (a long list of French credits) as sisters Juliette and Léa, respectively. Juliette has just been released after 15 years in prison (for murder) and Léa, who was just a teenager when her sister was convicted, has invited her to join her household in the French town of Nancy, with Léa's husband Luc, their two adopted Vietnamese daughters (the elder one, an 8 year old chatterbox, is adorable), and Luc's aged father. The movie's intensity is lifted from time to time, including scenes in a marvelous swimming pool. We eventually understand what we did not at the beginning, and learn why Léa has loved her sister so long.
