Ocean's Eight (2018)

Jack and I had fun watching this caper with gorgeous costumes and high production values, wherein Danny Ocean's sister Debbie plots with a crew of smart, confident, beautiful women to rob the Met Gala. The sparkling pictures sparkle even more with the talents of Sandra Bullock (last blogged for Our Brand Is Crisis), Cate Blanchett (most recently in these pages for Song to Song), Helena Bonham Carter (last in Suffragette), Mindy Kaling (most recently in A Wrinkle in Time), Rihanna (an established musician whose acting career is just taking off), Awkwafina (I saw her one episode of Mary + Jane but none of her other roles; I'm looking forward to Crazy Rich Asians later this year), and Anne Hathaway (last in Colossal). There are dozens of other cast members.

Gary Ross (Oscar nominated for co-writing Big (1989), writing Dave (1993), and adapting Seabiscuit (2003); also wrote Pleasantville (1998) and directed the latter two, among other credits) directs, is credited with the story, and co-wrote the screenplay with Olivia Milch (her second script; Awkwafina was in the first one, which Milch directed).

To give credit where it's due, wardrobe is by Sarah Edwards (nominated by her peers in the Costume Designers Guild for Igby Goes Down (2002) and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, also dressed the cast of Michael Clayton (2007), Salt, Tower Heist, and others), production design by Alex DiGerlando (after I wrote about him in Dark Horse he designed Chi-Raq and more), and cinematography Eigil Bryld (I've seen his work in Kinky Boots (2005), In Bruges (2008), and eleven episodes of House of Cards).

Composer Daniel Pemberton's (last blogged for All the Money in the World) uplifting soundtrack can be streamed from this youtube playlist (with commercials--sorry!) and here's a list of songs in the movie.

Though this is not high art we enjoyed it. Rotten Tomatoes' critics not so much, averaging 67% and its audiences hardly at all at 47.
